The 1959 Pittsburgh Steelers

TOM TRACY:

Halfback from Tennessee. Traded to the Steelers by Detroit during the training season in 1958. Proceeded to lead the team in rushing. Was second in pass receiving, second in scoring, and completed six out of sixteen passes. He, along with Layne and Orr, gave the Steelers their best offensive punch in the past few years. Also kicks field goals and extra points.

ERNIE STAUTNER:

End from Boston College. Easily one of the all-time great tackles in league's history. Selected on everybody's all-pro team. Has missed few allpro games. Is recognized by opposing coaches and players as the toughest lineman to handle. May be found at defensive end. Pittsburgh fans recognized his abilities with a big "day" and banquet last year.

   

RAY MATHEWS:

Halfback and end from Clemson. A top end with great speed. Caught 25 passes for 495 yards and four touchdowns. One of the toughest men to cover in the league. Especially dangerous on deep pass. Also plays some offensive halfback. Once the property of the St. Louis Browns. Lives in Port Vue, Pa.

FRANK VARRICHIONE:

Tackle from Notre Dame. A first draft pick. One of the few linemen so selected by Steelers. Great offensive tackle. A fine blocker. Known around country as Faintin' Frank. Collapsed in Iowa game, allowing Irish to get in one play and tie the score. A tough tackle with an Oxford accent.


DALE DODRILL:

Middle guard from Colorado State. This will be his ninth year in the pros. Pound for pound, probably the best lineman in football. Great cat-like speed. Selected on most All-Pro teams.

ED BEATTY:

Center from University of Mississippi, came to Steelers in trade three years ago. Was Los Angeles Rams' No. 1 draft pick in 1955. Was switched from linebacker to offensive center. Spends his off-seasons in University of Tennessee dental school. Will graduate in a few years and hopes to practice on West Coast.

   

DICK ALBAN:

Halfback from Northwestern University, came to the Steelers in a trade with the Washington Redskins. Teammates and coaches rank him as one of the best wingmen in football. Great tackler and excellent play diagnostician. Born in Pennsylvania.

 

DARRELL BREWSTER:

End at Purdue. Chicago Cardinals No. 1 draft choice in 1952. Sent to Cleveland Browns where he played for seven years. Was leading pass receiver for four consecutive years. Has played defensive end. Shifted to offense in 1953, and has starred since.

   

JIMMY ORR:

End from Georgia. League's Rookie of the Year. Sent to Steelers at the end of the training season by the Los Angeles Rams. Along with Layne, he is credited with helping re-build offensive unit. Led team in pass receiving with 33 receptions and 7 touchdowns. Started at Clemson on basketball scholarship, then transfered to Georgia and football. Was a great high school athlete in South Carolina.

JACK BUTLER:

Halfback from St. Bonaventure University. Easily one of the best football players in the National League. A top defensive back. Picked on every allleague team and selected for the All-Pro game for the past four years. Has played some offensive end. Was not drafted by pros. Came as a "sleeper." Never played high school ball. Tough, deadly tackler. Is a player's player. Married and lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
